Reading Your Equity Curve
Understanding Your Equity Curve
The equity curve is one of the most important tools for evaluating your trading performance.
What is an Equity Curve?
A line chart showing your account balance over time:
- X-axis: Time (days, weeks, months)
- Y-axis: Account value or cumulative P/L
Reading the Curve
Upward Slope
- Consistently profitable
- Strategy is working
- Good risk management
Flat Periods
- Break-even trading
- May need strategy adjustment
- Could indicate changing market
Downward Slope (Drawdown)
- Losing period
- Time to review trades
- Check if strategy still valid
Key Patterns
Steady Growth
A smooth, upward-sloping curve indicates:
- Consistent edge
- Good position sizing
- Controlled risk
Choppy Growth
Large up and down swings suggest:
- Inconsistent execution
- Position sizing issues
- Possible overtrading
Sharp Drops
Sudden large declines indicate:
- Single large loss
- Black swan event
- Position sizing too large
Using the Equity Curve
- Identify winning periods: What were you doing right?
- Analyze drawdowns: What went wrong?
- Spot patterns: Does performance vary by:
- Time of day/week/month
- Market conditions
- Position size
Equity Curve Trading
Some traders use equity curve feedback:
- Reduce size during drawdowns
- Increase size during winning streaks
- Pause trading if curve breaks down
