Understanding Your Win Rate and Profit Factor
Win Rate vs Profit Factor
Two essential metrics that tell different stories about your trading.
Win Rate Explained
Formula: (Winning Trades ÷ Total Trades) × 100
Example:
- 60 trades total
- 36 winners
- Win Rate = 36/60 = 60%
What it tells you:
- How often you're right
- NOT how profitable you are
Why Win Rate Isn't Everything
A trader with 80% win rate can still lose money:
- 80 winning trades × $50 = $4,000
- 20 losing trades × $300 = $6,000
- Net Loss: -$2,000
Profit Factor Explained
Formula: Gross Profit ÷ Gross Loss
Example:
- Total profit from winners: $15,000
- Total loss from losers: $10,000
- Profit Factor = 15,000/10,000 = 1.5
Interpretation:
| Profit Factor | Meaning |
|---|---|
| < 1.0 | Losing money |
| 1.0 - 1.5 | Marginal |
| 1.5 - 2.0 | Good |
| 2.0 - 3.0 | Very Good |
| > 3.0 | Excellent |
The Perfect Balance
Scenario Analysis:
| Win Rate | Avg Win | Avg Loss | Profit Factor | Result |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 80% | $50 | $300 | 0.67 | LOSING |
| 40% | $300 | $100 | 2.0 | WINNING |
| 50% | $150 | $100 | 1.5 | WINNING |
Finding Your Sweet Spot
High Win Rate Strategy:
