Reading Your Equity Curve

The equity curve is one of the most powerful tools for understanding your trading performance. It tells a story that raw numbers alone cannot.

What is an Equity Curve?

An equity curve shows the cumulative value of your trading account over time:

  • X-axis: Time (trades or dates)
  • Y-axis: Account value or cumulative P/L
  • Line: Your performance journey

Accessing Your Equity Curve

  1. Go to Dashboard > Analytics
  2. Find the Equity Curve chart
  3. Adjust time period as needed

Curve Patterns

The Ideal Curve

A healthy equity curve shows:

  • Steady upward slope
  • Small, contained pullbacks
  • Consistent growth rate
  • Quick recovery from dips

Warning Signs

Patterns that indicate problems:

Key Metrics from the Curve

Maximum Drawdown

The largest peak-to-trough decline:

Drawdown = (Peak Value - Trough Value) / Peak Value × 100%

What to look for:

  • How deep do drawdowns go?
  • How long do they last?
  • How quickly do you recover?

New Highs

Track when you make new equity highs:

  • Frequent new highs = good momentum
  • Long periods without = extended drawdown
  • Pattern of new highs = consistent growth

Recovery Time

How long to recover from drawdowns:

1-4 weeksNormal

> 3 monthsNeeds attention

Analyzing Your Curve

Identify Phases

Look for distinct phases:

  1. Growth Phase: Steady upward movement
  2. Consolidation: Sideways action
  3. Drawdown Phase: Declining equity
  4. Recovery Phase: Climbing out of drawdown

Find Inflection Points

Key moments where performance changed:

  • What happened at that point?
  • Did something change in your trading?
  • External factors (market conditions)?

Compare to Market

Overlay market performance:

  • Are you outperforming?
  • Do you draw down with the market?
  • Are you uncorrelated?

Curve Interpretation

Smooth vs. Volatile

Smooth curve (low volatility):

  • Consistent position sizing
  • Good risk management
  • Sustainable approach

Volatile curve (high volatility):

  • Inconsistent sizing
  • Large winners/losers
  • May be unsustainable

Slope Analysis

The angle of your curve indicates:

SlopeMeaning
Steep upStrong performance
Gradual upSteady gains
FlatBreaking even
DownLosing money

Using the Curve for Improvement

Strategy Evaluation

Compare curves by strategy:

  • Which strategies have smooth curves?
  • Which are volatile?
  • Which recover fastest?

Position Sizing

Curve shows sizing effects:

  • Large swings = sizing too big
  • Flat periods = sizing too conservative
  • Optimal = steady growth

Rule Adherence

Curve often reflects discipline:

  • Smooth = following rules
  • Spiky = emotional trading
  • Consistent = systematic approach
